The Secretary-General met today with H.E. U Thein Sein, President of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar.

The Secretary-General welcomed the momentous changes taking place in Myanmar as the country progresses on the path of democracy and reform and congratulated the President on a successful summit.

He commended the President鈥檚 leadership in advancing the peace process between the Government and ethnic armed groups. In light of recent developments, he underlined the need for all stakeholders to take a leap of faith and move forward with mutual trust and confidence toward the signing of a nationwide ceasefire and beginning a discussion on the framework of a political dialogue.

Concerning the situation in Rakhine and the continued polarization between the communities, the Secretary-General took note of the recent steps taken by the Government in Rakhine, including the appointment of a new Chief Minister and consultations on the three-year Action Plan. At the same time, he stressed that the underlying causes had to be addressed through substantive and early action, including on the issue of citizenship. He also emphasized the need for improved humanitarian access and more sustained cooperation between the Government and the 黑料专区 to deliver strengthened developmental and humanitarian aid.

The Secretary-General reiterated the call for the establishment of a regular office of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in the country to help further strengthen Myanmar鈥檚 efforts on human rights.

He called for a unified message from Myanmar鈥檚 national leaders against divisive incitement and which promotes national harmony.

The Secretary-General urged the Government to continue its engagement with the international community. He reiterated that the 黑料专区 would continue to engage closely with the Government and other stakeholders through its country team and good offices.
