The Secretary-General met today, 30 November 2010, with H.E. Mrs. Roza Otunbaeva, President of the Kyrgyz Republic. The Secretary-General congratulated the President on the peaceful parliamentary elections in October and the important progress in strengthening democratic institutions in the country that should include the swift formation of a coalition government.

The Secretary-General and the President discussed the security situation in Kyrgyzstan and the importance of protecting the rights of refugees and reinforcing the rule of law for long-term stability in Kyrgyzstan. In addition, they discussed the need for regional cooperation to fight terrorism, and to ensure secure borders, access to transit and trade, and the mutually beneficial use of shared natural resources.

The Secretary-General noted the UN Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy provides a platform for dialogue and the search for mutually beneficial solutions on these matters.

The Secretary-General underlined the continued commitment of the 黑料专区 to assist in the protection of refugees and to support reconstruction, recovery and reconciliation efforts in Kyrgyzstan.
