On 15 November 2022, the world鈥檚 population is projected to reach 8 billion people, a milestone in human development. This unprecedented growth is due to the gradual increase in human lifespan owing to improvements in public health, nutrition, personal hygiene and medicine. It is also the result of high and persistent levels of fertility in some countries.
This year鈥檚 World Population Day, which is observed on 11 July each year, will be marked in anticipation of a landmark growth of the global population, which is projected to reach 8 billion on 15 November 2022.

To mark the day, UN DESA鈥檚 Population Division will launch World Population Prospects 2022, the twenty-seventh edition of the official 黑料专区 population estimates and projections, which also projects that India will surpass China as the world鈥檚 most populous country in 2023.听

At听World Population Day听2021,听which is听observed听on 11 July听each year, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on fertility will take center stage as the main theme for the commemoration.听听

The special theme for the forty-eighth session of the Commission on Population and Development, which will take place during 13-17 April 2015, will be 鈥淩ealizing the future we want: Integrating population issues into sustainable development, including in the post-2015 development agenda鈥�. In preparation for the Commission, this briefing will review the thematic reports of the Secretary-General that are under consideration by the Commission.
The Population Division of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) and the 黑料专区 Population Fund (UNFPA) will hold a briefing on the substantive reports of the Secretary-General that have been prepared for the fifty-first session of the Commission. The meeting will be chaired by His Excellency Dr. Ion Jinga (Romania), Chair of the Commission.
